Today’s children have access to more screens than ever but that doesn’t mean play time should be limited to videos and apps.
Screens really aren’t the villain—they can actually be a lifesaver, especially during those long, chilly winter days. But if you’re feeling like your home has slipped into a bit of a screen-time routine, or you’re just looking for fresh, fun ways to fill the day, you’re in the right place.
Let’s be honest—toddlerhood can be a lot. Add in spending more time at home than usual, and some days can feel extra-long. Even for those of us who are used to being home, doing it day in and day out can get a little repetitive. That’s why I started adding a few simple, intentional activities into our routine—not just for my child’s development, but for my own sanity too! We’ve tried quite a few things, and these are some of our absolute favourites. They’re easy to set up, budget-friendly, and—most importantly—kept my little one happily engaged (at least for a good toddler stretch of time!). These worked great around ages 2 to 2.5, but they can easily be adjusted for younger or older kiddos too.
INTERACTIVE PUZZLE PLAY 🧩
This is one of our absolute go-to activities—and the best part? You can switch it up so easily that it feels brand new every time! I like to hide pieces from two (or more!) puzzles in a sensory bin and turn it into a little treasure hunt. Your child gets to dig around, find the pieces, and figure out exactly where they belong—so much fun!

It’s a fantastic way to introduce early sorting skills too (think animals vs. vehicles), all while giving those once-too-easy puzzles a fresh twist. Simple, playful, and surprisingly engaging—this one’s always a win!
ANIMAL HOSPITAL 🐾
This one is always a hit! It’s such a sweet and playful way to teach body parts while also building empathy. We pretend the animals have little “injuries” in different spots, and then it’s time to step in as the doctor and make them all better. Of course, adding band-aids is the highlight—because let’s be honest, that’s the most exciting part!

TRANSFORM YOUR HOME INTO A PLAYZONE 🎉
🏰 Build a Fort
Ready for some cozy creativity? Grab those couch cushions, blankets, and pillows and start building your own little hideaway! Got an extra crib mattress or exercise mat? Even better—bring it in for extra comfort and fun. Trust me, once you start, you’ll be upgrading your fort game in no time—it’s like creating a whole new world right in your living room!
🙈 Play Hide and Seek
You can never go wrong with this classic! Take it up a notch by adding walkie-talkies—suddenly it’s not just hide and seek, it’s a full-on mission. “Do you copy?” 😉

🧗 Climbing Fun
If you’ve got the space (and feel like investing a little), there are some amazing indoor climbing setups out there. You might come across names like “Pikler Triangle” or “Swedish Ladder”—they sound fancy, but they’re basically super fun ways for kids to climb, explore, and burn off energy indoors.
🎢 Extra Play Equipment
From mini slides to ball pits, there are so many simple ways to bring playground vibes inside. These are great for active play and can keep little ones entertained for ages.

🛝 Stair Slide Adventure
Yes—it’s exactly what it sounds like! Turn your stairs into a mini slide for an instant thrill. Just make sure to add some soft cushioning at the bottom and keep a close eye while the fun is in full swing. Fast, exciting, and guaranteed giggles!
SCAVENGER HUNT FUN 🔍
Get ready for a little adventure—right at home or outdoors! This activity is such a fun way to keep your toddler moving and exploring. Simply draw (or sketch!) a few easy items for them to find, and let the hunt begin. Once they spot something, show them how to check it off—instant excitement!

It’s perfect for those days when you’re stuck inside because of the weather but still want to burn off some energy. Simple, interactive, and full of “I found it!” moments—what’s not to love? 🎉
RAINBOW RICE FUN 🌈
This one is an absolute favourite and a sensory bin we keep coming back to again and again—it never gets old! Making rainbow rice is super simple and just as fun as playing with it.

All you need is one cup of dry rice, a tablespoon of white vinegar, and a few squirts of food colouring. Pop everything into a Ziplock bag, give it a good shake (kids love helping with this part!), and watch the magic happen as the colour spreads. Then just pour it out onto a paper plate and let it dry. Repeat for as many colours as you like, and voilà—your bright, colourful sensory play is ready to go!
Easy to make, visually exciting, and perfect for little hands to explore! 🎉
LID & CONTAINER MATCH 🫙
If your little one loves opening and closing things, this activity is a total win! Instead of letting them explore every kitchen cabinet 😄, gather a mix of containers and lids and pop them into a bin.

Now it’s their turn to twist, match, and figure out which lid goes where. It’s like a mini puzzle that keeps those busy hands happily occupied! Simple, fun, and a great way to channel that curiosity into something a little more organized. 🎉
MUFFIN TIN MATCH-UP 🧁
Here’s a simple activity that turns learning into playtime fun! I wrote familiar letters on the back of a muffin tin using a dry erase marker, and then it was game on— her mission was to match her alphabet magnets to the right spots.

It’s like a hands-on letter puzzle that keeps little minds and fingers busy! Easy to set up, super engaging, and a fun way to sneak in some learning while they play. 🎉
HOMEMADE PLAYDOUGH FUN 🎨
For some reason, my kid wasn’t super into playdough… until we made our own! I followed this recipe and got her involved in the process, which made it extra fun. ✨ The batch turned out soft and squishy, and he absolutely loved it. Since then, we’ve been playing with it almost every single day! Lately, we’ve been getting creative with what we use—beyond our little set of playdough tools, blocks from a shape sorter have been a big hit!

FOIL PRESENTS FUN! 🎁
Tearing open “presents” wrapped in aluminium foil is such a fun way for little ones to build hand strength and fine motor skills! Plus, toddlers can’t get enough of the surprise factor—who cares if the toy inside isn’t brand new?

LETTER STICKER MATCH FUN! 🔤
Here’s another great idea from Busy Toddler! Write letters or numbers on a cardboard roll (or even just a piece of paper) and grab some round dot stickers with matching letters. Let your little one match the stickers to the letters on the roll—it’s such a simple way to practice recognition and fine motor skills! You can also try the same activity on a plain sheet of paper with stickers for extra variety.

SNOW PAINTING FUN ❄️🎨
Got some snow and a toddler (or a mom 😉) who doesn’t want to get chilly? Bring the snow inside! We used food colouring mixed with water to “paint” the snow, but you could also try water colours—or even acrylic paint if you’re feeling adventurous! It’s a super fun, colourful way to enjoy snow without freezing fingers!

SINK PLAY SURPRISE! 🚰 🧸
This one started on a whim one day when I was feeling a bit desperate… but wow, the sink was irresistible for my kid! 😄 I just added a doll and some dishes from her play kitchen, and she played happily for almost 45 minutes! Don’t worry—they don’t actually have to climb in the sink to have fun—a step stool works just as well!

Today’s children have access to more screens than ever but that doesn’t mean play time should be limited to videos and apps. Rich, hands-on, engaging activities boost physical, cognitive, emotional and social development far more than passive screen time ever can.
